Aleister Crowley, "The book of Lies"
lampre-editorial | ISBN: 0877285160 | 200 pages | Jun 1, 2000 | PDF | English | 1.5MB
"The Book of Lies," by Aleister Crowley, is a masterpiece of modern occult literature. The book consists of 93 short chapters (two of which are not numbered), together with Crowley's own commentaries on the chapters. It is marvelous that we thus get to hear Crowley's unique voice speaking in two complementary modes: the revelatory and the analytical.
The subject of each chapter is determined more or less definitely by the Qabalistic import of its number. Thus Chapter 25 gives a revised ritual of the Pentagram; 72 is a rondel with the refrain ~Shemhamphorash', the Divine name of 72 letters; 77 Laylah, whose name adds to that number; and 80, the number of the letter Pe, referred to Mars, a panegyric upon War. Sometimes the text is serious and straightforward, sometimes its obscure oracles demand deep knowledge of the Qabalah for interpretation, others contain obscure allusions, play upon words, secrets expressed in cryptogram, double or triple meanings which must be combined in order to appreciate the full flavour; others again are subtly ironical or cynical. At first sight the book is a jumble of nonsense intended to insult the reader. It requires infinite study, sympathy, intuition and initiation.
THE FORTS OF JUDAEA 168 Be-AD 73 FROM THE MACCABEES TO THE FALL OF MASADA
ISBN:978184603171 | 2008 Osprey Publishing Ltd. | 68 pages | PDF | 27 MB | English
The period from 168 BC until AD 73 (known as the Second Temple period) was an important one in the history of the Jewish people, and is often considered a golden age where the Jews achieved complete political independence. The fortifications erected by the Hasmonaean and the Herodian rulers that held sway during this period fulfilled a variety of important tasks. First and foremost was the defence of the areas in which they were located. In times of peace, some controlled the main highways of the kingdom, such as the fortresses of Hyrcania, Alexandrium and Masada, their small garrisons keeping the constant threat of brigands and outlaws away. The royal palaces of the Hasmonaeans and Herod, which lay at the very centre of power, were protected by chains of fortresses around them. Good examples are provided by the Antonia fortress and the Citadel towers in Jerusalem, which protected Herod's palace and the Temple; and the fortress of Cyprus, which protected Herod's palaces at Jericho. Other fortresses, such as Herodium, acted as regional capitals. In addition, some fortresses served as prisons for political prisoners, the most famous being Herod's sons Alexander and Aristobulus who were jailed in Sebaste, and John the Baptist, who was a prisoner of Antipas in the fortress of Machaerous. Last but not least, these fortresses were

Innovation and Employment
Edward Elgar Publishing | 2001-09 | ISBN: 1840644141 | 214 pages | PDF | 1,2 MB
Which kinds of growth lead to increased employment and which do not? This is one of the questions that this important volume attempts to answer. The book explores the complex relationships between innovation, growth and employment that are vital for both research into, and policy for, the creation of jobs. Politicians claiming that more rapid growth would remedy unemployment do not usually specify what kind of growth is meant. Is it, for example, economic (GDP) or productivity growth? Growing concern over ‘jobless growth’ requires both policymakers and researchers to make such distinctions, and to clarify their employment implications.

Philip Pettit “Made with Words: Hobbes on Language, Mind, and Politics"
Princeton University Press | 2008-01-03| ISBN: 0691129290 | 192 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB
Hobbes's extreme political views have commanded so much attention that they have eclipsed his work on language and mind, and on reasoning, personhood, and group formation. But this work is of immense interest in itself, as Philip Pettit shows in Made with Words, and it critically shapes Hobbes's political philosophy.
Pettit argues that it was Hobbes, not later thinkers like Rousseau, who invented the invention of language thesis--the idea that language is a cultural innovation that transformed the human mind. The invention, in Hobbes's story, is a double-edged sword. It enables human beings to reason, commit themselves as persons, and incorporate in groups. But it also allows them to agonize about the future and about their standing relative to one another; it takes them out of the Eden of animal silence and into a life of inescapable conflict--the state of nature. Still, if language leads into this wasteland, according to Hobbes, it can also lead out. It can enable people to establish a commonwealth where the words of law and morality have a common, enforceable sense, and where people can invoke the sanctions of an absolute sovereign to give their words to one another in credible commitment and contract.
Written by one of today's leading philosophers, Made with Words is both an original reinterpretation and a clear and lively introduction to Hobbes's thought.
